Nasheed threatens protests if talks on reform are refused
He said the country is facing economic pressures, including rising prices and changes in the value of the US dollar.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called on President Mohamed Muizzu to begin discussions on proposed changes to the governance structure, warning that protests will continue if the government does not respond.
Nasheed made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing a rally organised by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
He said the country is facing economic pressures, including rising prices and changes in the value of the US dollar, and stated that both the government and the public have a responsibility to address these issues.
“I call upon the government and President Muizzu to come to the negotiating table and begin these discussions. We cannot abandon the nation at this stage,” Nasheed said.
He added that protests would continue if there is no engagement from the government.
During his address, Nasheed raised concerns about the current constitutional framework. He said that while the Constitution had previously contributed to increases in revenue and income, it was based on limited reforms at the time of its drafting.
He stated that the framework has since led to issues including misuse of authority and administrative inefficiencies.
“Therefore, I am certain that there is no one who does not recognise the necessity for a structural change in the Maldives,” he said.
Nasheed concluded by reiterating his call for dialogue and stated that demonstrations would continue if the government does not enter discussions.
