Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that his candidacy for the chairpersonship of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is not directed against the party leadership.

Nasheed made the remarks on Saturday night during a campaign rally titled “Bodubadhalu” held in Addu City. He has declared his candidacy for the party’s chairperson position, which is currently vacant.

The Member of Parliament for South Galolhu constituency, Meekail Ahmed Naseem, is also contesting for the post.

Addressing the gathering in Hithadhoo, Nasheed said his focus is on managing the party and not on seeking the presidency.

“I am not here saying that I want to become President. Managing this institution is of greater importance at this time,” he said.

Nasheed stated that his political work has been centred on advancing the interests of citizens and that his decision to contest reflects this objective.

He also said that political parties play a central role in the country’s system and that managing such an institution requires sustained effort.

“I am not contesting against the MDP leadership. My contests have always been against the opposition,” he said.

Nasheed further noted that strengthening the party is necessary for future electoral outcomes. He said his experience would contribute to the party’s direction.

The MDP is currently preparing to hold elections for the chairperson position following internal developments related to the initial announcement of the process.

Nasheed called on party members to consider their decision and support his candidacy in the upcoming vote.
