Man remanded over assault on mayor Azim

A man arrested in connection with the alleged assault of Malé City Mayor Adam Azim has been remanded in custody for 15 days.

The suspect, identified in a Criminal Court of the Maldives order as Abdulla Muaz, 35, of G. Airy, was presented before court on Tuesday on suspicion of assault.

The incident took place last Friday during a protest organised by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), where Mayor Azim was participating in a series of demonstrations.

According to the court order, the suspect told investigators that he approached the Mayor to speak with him and alleged that protesters had used violence against him.

Police informed the court that the suspect made physical contact with the Mayor and attempted to commit an act of violence.

The order also stated that Muaz has previous records of arrest and detention.

The court ordered that he remain in custody for 15 days while the investigation continues.
