Meekail Ahmed Naseem, a candidate for the chairpersonship of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has requested disciplinary action against the party’s Deputy Chairperson (Administrative), Ibrahim Waheed, over alleged involvement in campaign activities.

The complaint was submitted to Interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa.

According to the complaint, Waheed was actively involved in campaign events held for former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is also contesting for the chairperson position.

Meekail stated that photographic and video material shows Waheed’s participation in the campaign. He argued that, as the party official responsible for administrative matters, including membership and internal activities, Waheed is required to remain neutral during the internal election.

The complaint further stated that support for one candidate by an office-bearer could create a conflict of interest and provide an advantage not available to other candidates.

Meekail has requested that Waheed be recused or suspended from his duties until the chairperson election campaign period concludes.

Waheed previously faced attempts by the interim leadership to remove him from office. However, as the post is an elected position, he later returned following the resolution of internal disputes.

The MDP chairperson election is expected to take place next month.
