Nasheed declines to revisit exit from MDP
Nasheed said explaining the matter would involve multiple accounts and that he does not wish to address it further.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that he does not intend to revisit the circumstances surrounding his departure from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in 2023.
Nasheed made the remarks on Sunday during a campaign meeting in Hulhudhoo, Addu City, where he is seeking election as the party’s chairperson.
During a question-and-answer session, a supporter asked about his decision to leave the party following his defeat in the presidential primary. Nasheed said explaining the matter would involve multiple accounts and that he does not wish to address it further.
“I am here now. My focus is on returning this party to power,” he said.
Nasheed described his connection to the party as longstanding and said his efforts are directed at its future direction.
“This party was built through the work of many people. I cannot leave it,” he said.
He added that discussing past events could lead to further disagreement.
Following his return to the party, Nasheed has been supported by a group led by Fayyaz Ismail, who has joined his campaign activities.
Nasheed is contesting against Meekail Ahmed Naseem, Member of Parliament for Galolhu South, whose campaign is backed by a group aligned with former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The election for the MDP chairperson position is scheduled for 12 June.
