The Maldives Police Service has opened an investigation into an alleged assault on Malé City Mayor Adam Azim during a rally in the capital.

The incident occurred on Friday night during a demonstration organised by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Video footage shows a man approaching the Mayor and pushing him while he was leading the march.

Individuals near the Mayor were seen responding to the person following the incident. The Mayor later sought treatment at ADK Hospital.

Police confirmed that an investigation is underway but did not provide further details.

Mayor Azim has alleged that the attack was planned by the government. In a statement issued earlier, the administration denied any involvement and said it had no connection to the incident.

The statement added that President Mohamed Muizzu had viewed the footage and condemned the act.

Authorities said the investigation began after the video circulated on social media.
