Former Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Fayyaz Ismail, has stated that former President Mohamed Nasheed is best placed to lead the party at this stage.

Fayyaz made the remarks on Saturday during a campaign rally in Hithadhoo, Addu City, where discussions on the party’s leadership continue ahead of the chairperson election.

The position has remained vacant for five months following Fayyaz’s resignation. He had previously cited internal challenges within the party.

The contest for the post includes Member of Parliament Meekail Ahmed Naseem and Nasheed, who recently rejoined the party.

Addressing the rally, Fayyaz said the party requires leadership that can manage internal matters and engage with different groups.

“At this stage, we believe Mohamed Nasheed is the person capable of carrying out that responsibility,” he said.

Fayyaz stated that leadership should be based on the needs of the party at a given time. He added that providing opportunities to younger members does not require placing them in all leadership roles.

“We are not denying space to the youth. However, decisions must be made based on circumstances,” he said.

He also noted that while he does not agree with Nasheed on all matters, he believes Nasheed can engage with different factions within the party.

Fayyaz said the party requires leadership that can communicate with the public and engage with stakeholders.

The MDP is preparing to hold an election for the chairperson position following internal discussions on the process and leadership direction.
