Nasheed questions membership deadline ahead of MDP vote
The party is scheduled to hold its chairperson election in June.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has raised concerns over the membership registration deadline set ahead of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson election, stating that the timing may limit new enrolments.
The party is scheduled to hold its chairperson election in June. Alongside Nasheed, Member of Parliament Meekail Naseem and former Member of Parliament Alhan Fahmy have expressed interest in contesting the post.
It is understood that the deadline for joining the party expired on Tuesday. Nasheed attributed the decision to the party’s interim leadership.
The position of chairperson is currently held in an acting capacity by Abdul Gafoor Moosa, while administrative matters are overseen by a committee formed by the MDP National Council. The committee includes Abdul Gafoor Moosa, Nasheed, Abdulla Shahid, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and Fayyaz Ismail.
In a video message shared during a campaign visit to Haa Alif Atoll, Nasheed said the shortened timeframe for membership registration could affect participation.
He stated that a number of individuals had joined the party before the deadline, bringing recent membership additions to more than 10,000.
Nasheed said he intends to work with new members as part of his campaign.
The MDP National Council had earlier decided to announce the chairperson election following the conclusion of the local council elections.
