Addu mayor backs Fayyaz for MDP presidential ticket
Nizar referred to challenges facing governance and called for strengthening the party’s leadership and internal structure.
Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar has expressed support for former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail to secure the party’s presidential ticket.
The endorsement follows announcements by Fayyaz regarding his intention to contest in the presidential election and by former President Mohamed Nasheed, who has declared his candidacy for the position of MDP Chairperson.
In a post on X on Tuesday evening, Nizar referred to challenges facing governance and called for strengthening the party’s leadership and internal structure.
He stated that Nasheed’s decision to return to active political leadership and contest for the chairperson role would contribute to the party’s direction.
“President Nasheed’s commitment to supporting former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail in securing the presidential ticket is a decision that I endorse,” Nizar said.
He also expressed support for both Nasheed and Fayyaz in their respective bids.
The position of MDP Chairperson became vacant following the resignation of Fayyaz Ismail.
Former President Nasheed and Member of Parliament for Galolhu South Meekail Ahmed Naseem are contesting for the chairperson role. Meekail launched his campaign earlier on Tuesday under the slogan “Ithubaaru” (Trust).
