Govt considers criminalising bullying, says minister
He said incidents of bullying have led to serious outcomes in some parts of the country and noted that the government is reviewing available legal options.
Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has stated that discussions are underway to introduce legal measures to address bullying, including the possibility of criminalising such conduct.
The Minister made the remarks on Thursday during a press conference in response to a question regarding efforts to prevent bullying.
He said incidents of bullying have led to serious outcomes in some parts of the country and noted that the government is reviewing available legal options.
“We are looking into measures that can be taken against bullying in schools and within the community. We are working with the Attorney General’s Office to determine whether criminal charges can be pursued in such cases,” he said.
The Minister added that the government would consider legislative changes if required to address the issue.
The review is being conducted in consultation with the Attorney General’s Office to assess whether existing laws allow for prosecution in cases linked to bullying.
The statement follows the death of an 18-year-old student earlier this week, who was found in a dormitory room. The case has led to public calls for measures to address bullying and related conduct.
