President calls for protection of journalists on Press Freedom Day
The President added that the promotion of human rights, sustainable development and peace are linked to media freedom.
President Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday called for the protection of journalists’ rights and the creation of a safe environment for those who report truthfully and on the basis of facts.
In a message issued to mark World Press Freedom Day, the President said responsible journalism plays a central role in maintaining a transparent democratic system.
He said freedom of the press underpins other forms of liberty in the modern era.
The President added that the promotion of human rights, sustainable development and peace are linked to media freedom.
“On this World Press Freedom Day, let us resolve to protect the rights of journalists and build a safe environment for those who write the truth and report facts,” he said.
Muizzu said that since taking office, one of his priorities had been to create conditions for Maldivian journalists to work safely.
He said all rights guaranteed to journalists under the Constitution would be upheld.
Describing a free media as both a right and a responsibility, the President said the Maldivian media should help reveal the truth and maintain public trust.
He also said media organisations should uphold principles and standards valued in the Maldives.
“My administration will always welcome constructive criticism aimed at holding the government accountable and sustaining transparency and good governance,” he said.
The President said the government was working to create information systems aimed at supporting the future of journalism.
He added that efforts were also under way to make journalism a viable profession for young people and one that provides a sustainable livelihood.
Muizzu said the Maldives faces challenges in sustaining media outlets due to its small population, and said the government’s aim was to create opportunities for a skilled generation of media professionals able to adapt to global changes.
He also called for caution over the use of deepfakes and Artificial Intelligence to spread misinformation.
The President said this required greater care in providing accurate information to the public.
He concluded by calling for joint efforts to build a free and safe media environment in the Maldives.
