MDP confirms 3 candidates for chairperson election
The contest is expected to centre on former President Nasheed and Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem.

Maldivian Democratic Party has confirmed three candidates for its upcoming chairperson election and announced the official order of candidates on the ballot.
The party opened applications for the election, scheduled for 12 June, on 22 April. Following the close of nominations, the MDP on Sunday released the list of approved candidates.
According to the party, the candidates in official order are:

The contest is expected to centre on former President Nasheed and Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem.
The third candidate, Ibrahim Mohamed, previously contested for a seat on L. Fonadhoo Council representing the MDP in the recent local council elections.
The chairperson post became vacant after the resignation of former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail in November last year.
Fayyaz has endorsed Nasheed in the contest, while former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has backed Meekail Ahmed Naseem.
