Former presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and Mohamed Nasheed on Friday agreed to work together in opposition to the administration of President Mohamed Muizzu.
During a meeting held in Malé, the three leaders signed a joint declaration stating that the current administration had encroached on constitutional rights, influenced the judiciary, weakened the authority of the People’s Majlis and undermined the independence of state institutions.
The meeting took place at M. Lalpoolge near West Park.
According to the declaration, the former presidents pledged to cooperate in addressing the issues raised and to work towards what they described as restoring the country’s constitutional and democratic framework.
The declaration identified several concerns regarding the current administration, including restrictions on press freedom and the imprisonment of journalists.
The leaders also raised concerns over economic conditions, increases in the cost of goods and services, government expenditure and delays in implementing reforms.
The statement further alleged that public confidence in the administration’s management of state assets had declined and claimed that democratic principles established over the years were being weakened.
Former President Yameen attended the meeting in his capacity as leader of the People's National Front, while Nasheed and Solih participated as senior figures of the Maldivian Democratic Party.
Following the meeting, the three former presidents held a joint press conference to brief the media on the agreement reached.
