MDP President Mohamed Nasheed on Sunday announced that he will contest the party’s presidential primary. The primary to select the party's candidate for next year's presidential election will be held on 28 January. Speaker Nasheed later announced in a tweet that he would be contesting the primary.

"I have decided to contest in the party's presidential primary. I would like to get votes from all the party members," the former president tweeted with two yellow heart emojis.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who has expressed interest in a second term in office, has also indicated that he will run for the primary. However, so far, the president has not announced this.

While Nasheed announced that he would run for the primary, relations between him and President Solih had soured. Before the primaries, the two leaders held talks for peace. However, these discussions have not yielded a solution.
