Man arrested following assault at Hulhumalé shop

Police have arrested a Maldivian man in connection with an incident in which an individual entered a shop in Hulhumalé carrying a knife and allegedly assaulted a person.

According to Maldives Police Service, the incident was reported on Friday and occurred at a shop in Hulhumalé Phase II.

Police said officers responded to reports that an individual had entered the premises carrying a sharp weapon and carried out an assault.

A Maldivian man was subsequently taken into custody in connection with the case.

The police said the investigation remains ongoing and no further details have been released.

Videos believed to be related to the incident have been circulating on social media.

One video appears to show a man standing near a shop's checkout counter before reaching towards computer monitors located at the counter.

A second video shows a man near the counter holding what appears to be a knife before leaving the premises.

The footage later shows several individuals outside the shop confronting the man, restraining him and taking him to the ground.

Police have not commented on the authenticity of the videos or whether the individuals involved in the footage are connected to the ongoing investigation.
