Police detain suspect over import of over 1kg drugs

A man from V. Keyodhoo has been arrested on suspicion of smuggling more than one kilogram of narcotics into the Maldives.

According to Maldives Police Service, the arrest was made during a joint operation conducted on Thursday involving the Drug Enforcement Department, Counter Narcotics Intelligence, Vaavu Atoll Police and the Maldives Customs Service.
Police said the operation was launched after receiving intelligence from Customs indicating that the suspect had allegedly imported more than one kilogram of narcotics into the country.
Following his arrest, Fauzan was brought before the court for a remand hearing.
The court ordered that he remain in custody pending the conclusion of legal proceedings in the case.
Police said investigations are continuing.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the type of narcotics involved or whether additional suspects are being sought in connection with the investigation.
