The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) says more than 2,500 party officials will be elected during its upcoming constituency elections.
The deadline for submitting applications for the internal elections expired on 30 June. The constituency elections are scheduled to be held on Saturday ahead of the party's national congress, which is set for September.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, PNC spokesperson Mohamed Firuzul said the elections would result in more than 2,500 elected representatives serving in party leadership positions across constituencies and islands.
Firuzul did not disclose the total number of applicants but said there were 131 more candidates than the number of positions available.
He added that the process of reviewing and finalising candidate applications had been completed.
"As these elections conclude across the country, more than 2,500 individuals will be elected to various positions within the party. They will assume their roles through an electoral process and will lead party activities and promote its policies within their respective constituencies," Firuzul said.
The constituency elections form part of the PNC's preparations for its national congress later this year.
