The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has established a committee to finalise a roadmap for restructuring the party's administration and amending its charter, appointing former party chairperson Fayyaz Ismail to lead the process.
The reform initiative began during Fayyaz's tenure as chairperson following the party's defeats in the most recent presidential and parliamentary elections.
Fayyaz stepped down as chairperson on 23 November while work on the proposed reforms was still underway.
The decision to establish a committee to complete the roadmap was made by the party's current chairperson, former President Mohamed Nasheed.
In addition to Fayyaz, the committee comprises 10 members:
-
Mariya Ahmed Didi
-
Imthiyaz Fahmy
-
Abdulla Sodiq
-
Mauroof Ahmed, MDP Legal Counsel
-
Ibrahim Waheed, MDP Deputy Chairperson (Administration)
-
Mohamed Rasheed Hussain
-
Ahmed Abdulla, MDP Deputy Chairperson (Finance)
-
Mahfooz Saeed, MDP Legal Director
-
Yasir Abdul Latheef
The committee has been formed as the party prepares for its National Congress, which Nasheed has said is expected to be held in September.
During a press conference last week, Nasheed also said he would support a proposed amendment to the party's charter that would prevent a sitting MDP chairperson from contesting the party's presidential primary before completing their term in office.
