The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has reported an 85% voter turnout in its internal elections held on Saturday to elect constituency and steering committee members.
Speaking at a press conference after voting concluded, PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla said around 40,000 party members were eligible to vote.
He said approximately 85% of eligible members cast their ballots, estimating turnout at between 32,000 and 33,000 voters. The final figure will be confirmed once the results are finalised.
The election was held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with 119 ballot boxes set up across the country.
According to the PNC, more than 2,500 members were elected to various positions within the party.
Abdul Raheem said the turnout reflected members' participation in the party's internal electoral process and support for the policies of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The elections were held ahead of the PNC's national congress, scheduled for September.
The vote elected presidents and vice presidents of constituency steering committees, along with members for other internal party positions.
