Parliament on Wednesday approved Fathimath Ameeza as Commissioner General of Taxation at the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).
The position became vacant after former Commissioner General Hassan Zareer was appointed Minister of Finance last month.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu nominated two candidates for the post: MIRA Deputy Commissioner Fathimath Ameeza and Mohamed Haleem Abdulla, Head of Finance at Villa Air.
Although Haleem was listed first in the President's nominations, Ameeza received the higher score during the Parliamentary Economic Committee's evaluation.
The committee interviewed both candidates on Monday and recommended that both names be submitted to Parliament for consideration.
According to the committee's report, Ameeza received 92 per cent, while Haleem received 83 per cent.
As the highest-scoring candidate, Ameeza's nomination was put to a vote first.
She was approved by Parliament with 64 votes in favour. No members voted against her, and the votes in support included members of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Ameeza joined MIRA when the authority was established in 2010 as a Senior Management Officer. She later served as Assistant Commissioner before being appointed Deputy Commissioner in late 2024.
She was appointed Deputy Commissioner after competing for the position against then Deputy Commissioner Asma Shafeeu, who had sought another term in office.
