MDP president Mohamed Nasheed on Thursday filed his nomination papers to contest the presidential primary.

Former Chairperson of MDP, Henveiru West MP Hassan Latheef announced Nasheed's nomination papers to contest in the primary that is scheduled to be held on 28 December.

Maafannu North MP Imthiyaz Fahmy, who belongs to the Nasheed faction, told Atoll Times on Thursday night that he had filed his nomination papers with the required signatures of 500 people.

Nasheed's close aides have been working to get these signatures for him from Male and Hulhumale for the past two days.

MDP opened its nomination slots for the primary on Sunday. On the same day, Nasheed announced that he would be contesting the primary and sought the support of party members.

The deadline to apply for the primary will end at 4pm on Friday. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who has decided to run for the primary, has not yet officially announced it. However, he is in the process of signing his support form. He also held a meeting on Wednesday evening to kick-start his campaign.

The primaries, which will be contested by two of the party's top leaders, will be the party's most intense and competitive election ever held. President Solih and Nasheed used to be close friends in the past, but now the relationship has taken a turn for the worse. Nasheed has been openly criticising President Solih lately.
