Former President Mohamed Nasheed' criticism is sure to be directed at President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the government. The most recent criticism by Nasheed, who has filed papers to contest the upcoming MDP presidential primaries, relates to corruption allegations.

Nasheed said charges are yet to be filed in major cases such as the MMPRC scandal and the ventilator scandal.

Nasheed, who has been at loggerheads with President Solih, said that the verdict will clarify what happened to the money in the MMPRC scandal and corruption in the award of 75 ventilators to a Dubai-based company for the treatment of Covid-19 patients.

"[But] this term of President Solih is coming to an end. None of this has been charged with a successful investigation," he said.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has forwarded the case to the Prosecutor General's Office (PG) for prosecution of three former officials who held key positions in the health ministry. However, not much progress has been made in prosecuting officials responsible for the MMPRC scandal.

The MMPRC scandal, which took place during former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration, is believed to have led to the siphoning off MVR 1.5 billion of the proceeds from the leasing of at least 30 islands and lagoons for resort development.

The MMPRC scandal was one of the main themes of President Solih's election campaign. The then opposition:

  • Promised to recover the stolen money

  • On the first day of this government's rule, a presidential commission called the Asset Recovery Commission was set up to fulfil that promise

  • The commission was disbanded three years later with little to no progress

  • MMPRC scandal is being investigated by the newly-constituted Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)
