A nine-year-old girl injured in a road accident in Hulhumalé Phase 2 on Saturday night has been transferred to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), where she is receiving treatment on a ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The accident occurred near Vinares Tower 7 when a motorcycle travelling along Hithigas Magu struck a person who was walking from the roadside towards a parked car.
The motorcycle was being driven by an 18-year-old Maldivian woman, with the nine-year-old girl travelling as a passenger. Both were thrown from the motorcycle following the collision.
The child sustained the most serious injuries in the accident, while police said the condition of the 18-year-old rider was stable.
The girl initially received emergency treatment at Hulhumalé Hospital before being transferred overnight to IGMH in Malé.
IGMH confirmed to Dhauru on Sunday that the child was admitted in the early hours of the morning and remains in the ICU.
“The child is in the ICU, receiving treatment on a ventilator,” the hospital said.
IGMH did not provide further details about her injuries. The child remains in critical condition.
According to eyewitness accounts, the car involved in the initial collision had stopped at the side of the road with its hazard lights on. The driver had closed the boot and was attempting to enter the vehicle when the motorcycle struck the person.
Witnesses said the motorcycle was travelling at speed when the collision occurred.
Both the rider and the child were thrown from the motorcycle following the impact. The child was then reportedly struck by another car approaching from behind.
Witnesses said the girl sustained a head injury, was bleeding and was unconscious at the scene.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.
