Police commissioner Mohamed Hameed said on Monday that the police have launched a major investigation to find out the truth behind the recent fire incidents in Male and the islands.

The police chief's comments come amid a major fire that broke out at the second-hand market in capital Male Sunday morning.

There have been at least three fire incidents in the recent past.

  • The first fire broke out on December 31 in a garbage dump at Addu Hulhudhoo harbour and later the same night on asphalt materials; the island council alleged that a group of people set it on fire

  • On Saturday, a fire broke out at fibreglass materials in the R. Alifushi garbage dump; the fire was brought under control after it spread profusely

  • A building at GDh. Fiori school also caught fire Sunday afternoon and burnt beyond use

"We call for public support for it," the police commissioner's tweet read.

The fire at the second-hand market had been brought under control after about three hours, but fire fighters are still working on completely putting out the flames.
