Verification of applications submitted for two housing schemes announced by the government for natives and long-time residents of Male will be completed by February end, planning ministry announced Thursday.

The government had in July opened applications for Binnveriya Scheme, which exclusively grants land plots from the Male region for the capital city's natives, and Gedhoruveriya Scheme, which includes flats to both Male natives and long-time residents of the city.

Application window for the two schemes ended on 15 October with 35,861 applications received through the dedicated portal:

  • Land: 15,164 applicants

  • Three-room apartments: 14,489 applicants

  • Two-bedroom apartments: 6,208 applicants

State housing minister Akram Kamaluddin told Atoll Times on Thursday that the process of verifying the information in the forms will be completed by the end of February.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Tuesday that land and flats will be provided by the end of his term, in line with the government's promises to solve the housing problems faced by the people of Male.

In addition to the land and flats allotted in Hulhumale, the government has promised to provide land to the people of Male by reclaiming the adjacent Giraavaru lagoon. Earlier, President Solih had announced that 1,000 land plots would be allotted at the time of development and 2,000 plots in Giraavaru lagoon site.

Efforts to fulfil this promise are also in full swing, he said. Explaining the status of these works now, he said:

  • Handing over the joint land reclamation project to Boskalis company, who had done the same in the past, is in the final stages of its final decision

  • The process of dredging and reclaiming the Giraavaru lagoon site will begin by the middle of this year

The government has obtained funds for these projects. Loans worth 101 million euros (MVR 1.6 billion) have been sourced from three European banks. For Giraavaru lagoon project, $27 million (MVR 416 million) has been sourced by selling a lagoon and island in Noonu atoll.
