Government on Friday announced a project to develop Addu Hankede as an integrated tourist destination.
Maldives Fund Management Corporation Limited (MFMC), owned 100% by the government, announced the project with its design.
As part of the project, which will bring major development to Addu and expand tourism, 1,041 rooms will be constructed in Hankede. It was identified by the fund management company as rooms of different ranges and different designs.
'Hankede – a different destination in every way," the company said in a tweet announcing the project.
According to the government, the Hankede project will create a lot of jobs in Addu and open up more avenues to move forward in tourism.
In 2006, a buyer was awarded the contract to develop a Hankede resort between Addu Maradhoo and Hithadhoo. It was handed over to a buyer a couple of times, but the work didn't take off. Last month, the government had decided to take real estate tourism there and handed over the project to the fund management.
In addition to Hankede, a similar project will be organised in K. Gaafaru.
