Social centres for senior citizens to be set up around Maldives

He said that after setting up such centres in Male, senior citizens' centres would be set up in different parts of the country as well.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Thursday announced plans to set up social centers for senior citizens in different parts of the Maldives.

Speaking at a function held at Dharubaaruge Thursday evening to award those who have served the state for a long time, the President said that it is important to create an environment where those who have served the state for a long time can come together and spend time happily.

On setting up of social centres for senior citizens, he said efforts are on to set up such centres in the atolls.

"God willing, the service will start soon," he said.

He said that after setting up such centres in Male, senior citizens' centres would be set up in different parts of the country as well. Setting up such centres will serve many purposes, he said.

"Facilitate and encourage senior citizens to get their due and respect. The other is to provide social support to senior citizens. The other is to increase the share of senior citizens in the society as much as possible. Plan your activities as much as possible to prepare for a healthy old age," he said.

The award for service to the state is given from 2021 onwards in recognition of the services rendered by the employees who have served the state for more than 35 years with competence and sincerity in discharging their duties and for their contribution to the development of an institution. Till this night, 309 people have been awarded the award.
