Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim on Saturday threatened that he will seek a no confidence vote against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih if he tries to remove MDP President Mohamed Nasheed from the post of speaker of the parliament.

Azim, a former leader of the Parliamentary Group (PG), made the remarks in response to an interview with a newspaper owned by the current leader of the PG and member of the Hithadhoo Constituency.

On Wednesday, Aslam spoke about the resumption of the previous efforts of MDP lawmakers to remove Nasheed from the post of Speaker of the Parliament. He said he had received the required number of signatures from the lawmakers to remove Nasheed from the post and that the approval of other party members would have to be obtained to do so.

Reacting to Aslam's remarks, Azim, who belongs to MDP’s Nasheed faction, tweeted that efforts would also be made to seek a vote of no confidence against President Solih.

"If they start working to remove the Speaker, we will also start the process of securing the vote of no confidence in President Solih," Azim tweeted on Nasheed's hashtag of the new branch in MDP Fikuregge Dhirun.

According to the rules of Majlis, if a quarter of the total number of MPs found to remove the Speaker, they can file a complaint. By the current strength of the parliament, it is 21 MPs. The case has to be filed;

  • As a resolution with signatures of required number of MPs

  • A speaker will be removed from his post only after he attends the voting session of the resolution and passes it with the support of the members who are present in the vote

MDP lawmakers began the process of removing Nasheed as speaker of the parliament in the middle of last year after he accused President Solih of committing criminal offences. At that time, signatures of members were obtained to remove Nasheed. However, at the request of President Solih, it did not take off afterwards.
