The main convention centre of Dharubaaruge has been designated as the headquarters for the presidential elections to be held in September.

Elections Commission Vice President Ismail Habeeb said on Wednesday that the planning ministry has decided to release Dharubaaruge to the EC for use as an election headquarters.

The Election Commission has decided to hold the elections on September 9. Earlier, the Election Commission had said it had agreed to use the Maldives Voice building as the presidential headquarters. However, the election authorities have expressed concern over the non-availability of the facility. Thus;

  • The EC had earlier said that the most important election work will start only after the centre is set up

  • Work as per the schedule of the elections can be done only if adequate space is available

  • The Election Commission is hiring staff to work for the elections

In many of the previous major elections, Dharubaaruge was used as an election headquarters. Later, when the commission's work was transferred to the old Jamaluddin building, election-related work was carried out in the building, but the building has now been vacated for the construction of a new building for Arabiya School.
