
Maldives dispatches first batch of tuna cans to quake hit Turkey

Maldives on Saturday dispatched the first batch of the 500,000 cans of tuna to Turkey as humanitarian aid.

In a statement, the Maldivian foreign ministry said on behalf of the government of Maldives, the humanitarian aid was handed over by foreign secretary Ahmed Latheef. The aid was seen off from Velana International Airport to Turkey by officials from the foreign ministry and the Honorary Consulate of Turkey in Maldives, the ministry added.
The aid is being airlifted by Turkish Airlines in five batches and is expected to be completed by Friday, the ministry said.
More than 50,000 people have been killed and tens of thousands injured after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on February 6.
