Police chief Mohamed Hameed has told a parliamentary committee on Tuesday that there is an increase in the number of missing children and such cases are mostly related to family negligence. According to him, one child has been reported missing 11 times in the last two years.
Hameed made the remarks at a meeting of the parliament's security services committee (241 Committee) with senior police officials on Tuesday to discuss the issue of missing persons.
Hameed said that most of the cases reported missing to the police are of children and senior citizens. He pointed out that the number of children being reported missing in the last two years has been at a worrisome level.
"31 children have gone missing 63 times. Some of the children leave the homes and dont return so that the police have to get involved. In one case, one child was reported missing 11 times, the second four times," Hameed said.
Replying to a question from a member of the committee on the issue of missing children, Hameed said that in such cases, it is mostly about negligence.
"... It's about the factors that arise from within the family. There have been issues that have been associated with social issues that have existed within us for a long time," he said.
Hameed said 31 cases of elderly missing persons were reported.
