MDP lawmaker Imthiyaz Fahmy on Thursday filed a police complaint against Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam and Henveiru South MP Hussain Shaheem for speaking out against the state providing security for Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
Imthiyaz, who belongs to Nasheed's Fikuregge Dhirun faction, raised the issue after Hussain spoke in parliament on Wednesday against the security granted to Nasheed. Hussain said the state spends heavily on Nasheed's security alone. While he had pointed this out earlier as well, Rozaina had already taken to social media to express her opinion that the expenditure on Nasheed's security was not enough for the state to bear.
In Imthiyaz's letter to the police, he said:
-
Nasheed is still denied justice for the May 6, 2021 assassination attempt
-
Abbas Faiz, the special representative appointed by the president to monitor the case, echoed similar concerns
-
An inquiry report revealed that the attack had happened because Nasheed was not given adequate protection despite the threat too his persona being at a 'critical' level
Pointing out that Nasheed had served as the president of the nation and now he is the Speaker of the Parliament, Imthiyaz said that even when the law mandates security, some people close to the government have been speaking out against it. That is, according to Imthiyaz, Hussain Shaheem, the deputy chair of the parliament's 241 committee, and Rozaina, the chair of the independent institutions committee.
According to Imthiyaz they have repeatedly spoken on various forums, refusing to provide security to Nasheed and urging the state to stop it. Imthiyaz alleges that there is a sinister plan behind their behaviour.
When asked about Rozaina and Hussain, he said:
-
These are two people who express a deep seated hatred towards Nasheed openly
-
It is hard to believe that there is any other reason to criticise and oppose the provision of legally mandated security to a person at the highest level of threat
-
This is being done with the intention of undermining his security
-
This is because they are convinced that if they succeed in reducing security, he will be more vulnerable
"Therefore, since there is room for this to be seen as an act of conspiracy or preparation for a terrorist crime in the bad intention of facilitating another attack on the body of the Speaker of the Parliament, President Mohamed Nasheed, I request you to look into the facts of this matter and take immediate action if there is any criminal act involved", he said in his letter to the police.
In May last year, Nasheed accused Hussain of obstructing the committee formed within MDP and the 241 committee of the parliament to investigate the matter. Reacting to the allegations, Nasheed said, "You've got my blood in your hands." Nasheed, however, said in a parliamentary session on May 5 that no allegation had been put on Hussain's head in the wake of the attack.
