Two Indian nationals were apprehended at the Velana International Airport on Monday, over suspicion of spying inside the airport’s premises. Dhauru also is informed that two other accomplices have gotten away, escaping by plane. The alleged spies have been ordered to be held in remand for 10 days.
The two suspects were apprehended and taken to police by aviation security officials after they had been monitored in the airport. Aviation Security frisked them and checked their belongings as well.
A trusted source told Dhauru:
-
Gadgets and cameras that could be used for spying were found in the suspects’ belongings.
-
During Police interrogation, the background information they gave was conflicting.
Aviation security had identified two other people with the alleged spies, but they had departed from Maldives before the suspects were apprehended.
Initially, the police have refrained from making any comments regarding these arrests, saying only that two foreign nationals are being questioned for suspicious activity at the airport.
A police officer confirmed to Dhauru that they had been remanded by court for 10 days, for further investigation. Police have since sent a message to news agencies, declaring:
-
The pair was arrested following an investigation into left luggage, and they were identified as the luggage owners afterwards.
-
One of the shirts in one of the luggage cases showed a button camera normally used for spying purposes.
While no further details have been divulged by authorities pertaining to the matter, police are investigating the case.
