Two Indians arrested for alleged spying at Velana International Airport (VIA) in August were released by the court due to lack of evidence, Police said on Tuesday.
Police told Atoll Times that the two were released by the court on September 8.
On 28 August, two Indian nationals suspected of spying were arrested at the airport:
-
The two individuals were suspected of spying by the Aviation Security after their belongings were searched and were then taken to court and remanded to 10 days in custody pending investigation.
-
Spy cameras that could be used for espionage were found from the suspects.

It has been confirmed that more people who were believed to have been working with the two arrested men have departed from the Maldives.
After repeated questioning by Atoll Times over the past three days, a police spokesperson revealed the latest information regarding this case.
"The two men were released on September 8 after the investigation could not produce enough evidence to charge them with any criminal charges," the spokesperson said.
"The two were sent from the Maldives on 9 September."
When asked for more details, the spokesperson added that the suspects were released by court after they were taken back when the 10-day remand period was over.
It is not clear whether they were deported or repatriated.
PNC's Deputy Leader and Maavashu MP Mohamed Saeed had submitted an emergency motion to the parliament on Monday regarding concerns related to this case. However, the parliament, which has a supermajority of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), rejected the case.
