Hassan Riza, brother of former MP Ibrahim Riza, has been given the ticket of the opposition PPM/PNC coalition to contest from the upcoming by-election for the vacant K. Guraidhoo constituency.
Riza passed away on February 23 after battling cancer. Following his death, the Elections Commission had scheduled the by-election to elect a member to the constituency on April 15.
Hassan Riza was the only candidate that applied to contest the PPM primary for the by-election. The party decided to give him the ticket without the primary, party Secretary General Ahmed Tholal told Atoll Times Wednesday evening.
MDP, the main opposition party in the ruling coalition, and the MNP, which works as an opposition party, are also contesting Guraidhoo by-election.
