PPM wins 2 island council by-elections

The PPM won the council membership seat and the women's development committee seat in the by-election held in Maafaru.

The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has won two council seats in three islands in the council by-elections held on Saturday.

The by-elections held on Saturday were held in H.A. Kelaa, N. Maafaru and A.Dh. Hanyaameedhoo. The by-election held in these islands resulted in:

  • To elect a councillor in Kelaa, Hanyameedhoo and Maafaru 

  • To elect a member of the Maafaru Women's Development Committee

The PPM won the council membership seat and the women's development committee seat in the by-election held in Maafaru. The council member seat was won by:

  • PPM candidate, Mohammed Abubakr, Falhomaage/N. Maafaru - 239 votes

  • MDP candidate - Muslim Mohammed, Dhonke/N. Maafaru - 90 votes

PPM candidate Maryam Shathira won the seat of the Women's Development Committee. She got 217 votes while Asrar Hassan, who contested on the MDP ticket, got 113 votes.

The PPM candidate won the seat against MDP in the Kelaa election as well:

  • PPM candidate Khadheeja Maurifa - Hefy/H.A. Kelaa 402 votes

  • MDP candidate Hawa Sudha, Araa-iru/H.A. Kelaa- 367 votes

The election in Hanyameedhoo was won by an independent candidate against the PPM:

  • PPM candidate Mohammed Waheed, Finihiyaage/A.Dh. Hanyaameedhoo - 169 votes

  • Independent contestant Mohammed Yasir, Blue Star/A.Dh. Hanyaameedhoo- 212 votes.
