Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) on Thursday issued an advisory to travellers using Velana International Airport (VIA) on Friday to prepare for anticipated congestion due to the arrival of Umrah pilgrims.

In a media statement, MACL stated, “Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours prior to their scheduled departure to ensure a smooth travel experience.”

Heavy traffic is expected along airport roads and within terminal areas, particularly during peak periods. MACL emphasised the importance of early arrival to mitigate delays caused by the increased passenger movement.

Passenger volumes are projected to peak during two specific timeframes. Between 6-9am, the airport expects to handle 2,678 arrivals, including 618 Umrah pilgrims, and 1,372 departures. From 2-4pm, arrivals are forecasted to reach 2,071, including 452 Umrah pilgrims, with 1,091 departures.

MACL has also called on taxi centres and drivers to support efforts to maintain smooth traffic flow. The statement read, “MACL requests all taxi centres and drivers to extend their cooperation during this peak time by ensuring timely pick-ups and drop-offs and maintaining traffic flow around the airport premises.”
