President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday promised rapid advancements for both Island Aviation Services (IAS) and the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) in the near future.

Speaking at the inauguration of the first wide-body aircraft for the national carrier, Maldivian, at Velana International Airport (VIA), the President emphasized that these developments are part of his administration's broader commitment to boosting the country’s infrastructure and economy.

During his address at the inauguration ceremony, President Muizzu stated that the addition of wide-body aircraft to the national airline’s fleet marked the first concrete step toward fulfilling a key promise made during his presidential election campaign. He assured the public that the second wide-body aircraft for Maldivian would be delivered in October, further expanding the national carrier's operations.

“This is just the beginning,” President Muizzu remarked. “The second wide-body aircraft will begin flying in October, and with these developments, we aim to elevate the tourism and aviation industries, which will significantly impact the nation’s economy,” he said, expressing confidence that these milestones will bring substantial benefits across various sectors, particularly tourism, which remains a cornerstone of the Maldives' economic growth.

The President also highlighted that the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which operates Velana International Airport, is poised to make great strides in development this year.

"MACL will cross many stages in a short period of time,” Muizzu asserted, noting that a new terminal at Velana International Airport would be opened within the year, contributing to the airport’s growing capacity and enhancing the passenger experience.

“This is the year of development,” President Muizzu continued. “We are committed to bringing positive change to all sectors, whether in the economy, structural development, or social progress. Our goal is to achieve stability, growth, and an environmentally sustainable future for our nation.”

He reiterated that alongside development, maintaining the country’s sovereignty and independence is a fundamental priority for his administration.
