Hassan Latheef and Hussain Amr, who were the contenders in the first internal elections of The Democrats for the party's presidency, have declared themselves victorious in the post.
The party has decided to announce the provisional results on Sunday. However, some members are expressing their dissatisfaction with the decision.
Voting was held from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday. Some positions have already been confirmed. Both Hassan and Amr say they have won the party presidential post according to their provisional results.
Hassan said in a post on X on Saturday evening that he won the election by a 'huge margin' as was shown by the result sheets.
"Today, it was an important political movement across the country. The next step is to start the real work. Congratulations and thanks to all the members," Hassan said in a post announcing his victory.
After Hassan made the post, Amr told Atoll Times that he too had won the election. Amr also said that he is leading the boxes in the bigger islands.
The Democrats' election committee chairman Ali Azim told Atoll Times at 8 pm that the results so far showed that Amr and Hassan's votes were very close. So, no one has been confirmed for the position yet, he said.
"Hassan is leading in the Male polls. Amr is leading in the southern polls. The numbers are contending very close," he said.
The Democrats tweeted on Saturday evening that provisional results would be announced early on Sunday. Democrats expressed displeasure on Twittercregarding the tardiness in result provisions.
"The delay is because some islands have not yet sent their results," a Democrats official told Atoll Times.
