EC fines all candidates in Guraidhoo by-election

EC Secretary General Hassan Zakariya told Atoll Times on Monday night that the three were fined for not completing required financial information.

Elections Commission (EC) has fined all the candidates who contested the by-election that was held for the K. Guraidhoo constituency.

The candidates who contested the Guraidhoo by-election that was held on April 15 are:

  • Ibrahim Shaz (MDP)

  • Hussain Riza Adam (PPM)

  • Ali Arif (MNP)

EC Secretary General Hassan Zakariya told Atoll Times on Monday that the three were fined for not completing the required information in their financial statements.

He added that:

  • All three candidates were fined in June

  • Each was fined MVR 6,000, payable by July 15

  • No one has paid the fine so far

Under Section 43 of the Parliamentary Elections Rules, each candidate must submit their campaign financial statement to the EC within a maximum of 21 days from the date of the election.

Financial statements should include:

  • Details of expenses incurred by the candidate in connection with the election, including money and property

  • Details of expenses incurred to secure support for the candidate

  • Details of how money was raised to spend on the election

  • Details of the persons who donated money and in-kind assistance in connection with the election and the amount donated by them

  • Bank account statement showing all transactions made from the bank account

Candidates for the Guraidhoo by-election were fined to encourage contestants to submit their financial statements, along with audit reports in the most transparent manner possible, Elections Commission chairman Fuad Thaufeeg told Atoll Times.
