MDP faces defeat in by-elections; PPM says public sentiment clear

Congratulating all the winning candidates and teams, PPM Vice President Ahmed Shiyam tweeted, “The test results show the people's position”.

Provisional results of the by-elections held on Saturday for Women's Development Committees (WDC) show that the opposition PPM won five out of eight seats.

Voting for the by-election of WDCs was held from 8 am to 4 pm on Saturday.

PPM won these seats: 

  • HDh. Finey, Zuhuda Mohamed

  • L. Maamendhoo, Saudiya Hussain

  • M. Veyvah, Shifaza Ibrahim

  • K. Dhiffushi, Aishath Sahira

  • GDh. Hoadedhoo, Narzana Hussain 

Ruling MDP won these seats:

  • TH. Gadhifushi, Mary Hassan

  • AA. Feridhoo, Sana Ahmed

Asima Rasheed, who contested as an independent candidate for R. Angolhitheemu, won the seat.

“The test results show the people's position," PPM Vice President Ahmed Shiyam tweeted, congratulating all the winning candidates and teams.

"With just two months to go for the presidential elections, it is very clear how the people are when PPM won five of the eight seats in the by-election held today and MDP got two seats."

R. Meedhoo and GA. Dhevvadhoo by-elections were also conducted on Saturday. PPM also won the seats in both these island. The party got these seats because no other party had contested.
