Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) president Faris Maumoon said on Monday that he will contest the upcoming presidential elections after holding talks with parties to reform the country's affairs.

MRM's founder Maumoon his son Faris met Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Gasim Ibrahim on Monday.

Maumoon and Faris spoke to reporters outside  H. Fulidhooge, where Maumoon Foundation's office is located. There has been a campaign on social media calling for Faris to contest the upcoming presidential elections amid rumours that he will contest.

Responding to a question from Atoll Times if he was interested in running for power, Faris said:

  • If that is the best way to improve the country's affairs, MRM will do it too

  • Before reaching that point, MRM is in talks with various political parties

  • Talks are underway to find the best possible course of action for the nation

"I would say that if that is the right way to reform the country, then I will do that [contesting elections]," Faris said.

When Maumoon was asked by Atoll Times what he thought of Faris contesting the presidential election, he said Faris was also now a "grown man" and that it was his "right" to run for presidency.

Although MRM is part of the ruling coalition, the party is yet to take a decision on supporting President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the September 9 presidential election.

President Solih and Maumoon met on Sunday. However, the meeting failed to reach a coalition deal.
