The National Integrity Commission (NIC) on Wednesday launched an investigation into the incident in which a group of people intercepted and blocked a motorcade carrying President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday night.

The commission tweeted on Wednesday that NIC will investigate whether the police have a role to play in the security provided to President Solih and if there is any negligence on the part of the police.

The NIC did not share any further details about the investigation.

MNDF and the parliament's 241 committee are also looking into the matter of the president's motorcade entering an opposition protest.

In one of the serial protests being held by the opposition every night in Male, the protesters blocked the president’s motorcade when it passed through the protestors infront of the PPM office.

However, the opposition says:

  • The president's motorcade went to the spot while the party was protested

  • Protesters were arrested for 'obstructing' motorcade, so that the police can escape being held responsible for security lapses

An emergency motion was also moved in parliament on Tuesday demanding the removal of defence minister Mariya Ahmed Didi, saying the president's motorcade's entry into an ongoing protest was not considered a coincidence. However, the case was dismissed.

Several senior officers of the unit, including the head of the president's security forces, Colonel Abdulla Ibrahim, have been suspended.
