Bangladesh has decided to grant long-term visas to Maldivian students studying in the country, the Maldivian foreign ministry announced Friday.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih met with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Haseena in December and requested her to provide long-term student visas to Maldivian students and on-arrival visas to Maldivians travelling to Bangladesh.
In a statement issued after a meeting held at the President's Office, Haseena did not comment on granting long-term visas to students, despite announcing the decision to grant on-arrival visas to Maldivians travelling to Bangladesh.
The foreign ministry announced the Bangladesh government's decision to grant long-term visas to Maldivian students. The ministry said it has been assured by the Bangladeshi government.
Foreign minister Abdulla Shahid also tweeted about the development, thanking his Bangladeshi counterpart Dr. AK Abdul Momen for the work done by him and for providing visa.
Bangladesh is home to a large number of Maldivian students studying medicine.
