Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Monday declared a case of measles as an outbreak, despite the disease being eliminated from the country.
A second child, suspected to have been infected with measles, was also identified on Monday.
HPA has issued a statement regarding the two cases detected in the southernmost Addu.
One child has been diagnosed with measles and samples of the child suspected to be infected are being collected and tested.
"However, as the contagious period has passed in these two children, it is important to note that there is no possibility of further infection from these two children at this stage," it said.
"Since measles has been eradicated in the country, even if there is only one case of the disease, it can be noted as an outbreak."
The statement further said:
-
The Addu Equatorial Hospital is working under HPA guidance to trace contacts and determine the source of infection
-
Vaccination drive for those who need to be vaccinated will also begin soon
-
The main symptoms of measles are fever and red pimples or rashes
-
Some people also show symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath and red eyes
In case of these symptoms, it is advisable to consult a health worker without delay.
"The agency will continue to disclose more information during the investigation and contact tracing of this outbreak," it said while concluding the statement.
