HPA urges precaution as Covid, flu cases rise

HPA advises to maintain social distancing while in public places or avoid crowded places if experiencing any symptoms of fever or flu.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Wednesday urged the public to take precautionary measures in the wake of the increasing number of Covid-19, seasonal flu and measles cases in the Maldives.

According to HPA, Covid cases started rising in early March.

Earlier, the number of cases had remained below 10, but between March 12 and March 18, the number of cases had gone up to 11.

A total of 84 covid-19 cases were detected between April 2-8. Of these, 73 cases were reported from the greater Male region. A total of 17 of these people were hospitalised.

Apart from Covid, HPA has also urged people to take important measures to prevent the spread of the deadly virus. These include:

  • Prolonged fevers may worsen the condition, so should consult a health worker as soon as possible

  • If anyone has symptoms of fever, mask the nose and mouth properly so that they are covered

  • Maintain social distancing while in public places or avoid crowded places if experiencing any symptoms of fever or flu

  • Wash hands properly and frequently with soap or use sanitizers

  • People who are at high risk of getting infected should wear masks outdoors and in crowds

  • Those eligible for covid vaccination and booster dose should also complete the doses

Covid vaccine statistics:

  • Number of people who have received their first dose – 399,315 (88% of the population)

  • Number of people who have received the second dose – 3,85,147 (85% of the population)

  • First booster dose – 1,67,677 people (37% of the population)

  • Second booster dose – 1,543 (0.34% of the population)

The Maldives has recorded 185,894 cases of Covid-19 so far. The death toll stands at 311.
