Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem on Monday denied reports that he had purchased a flat abroad and had been planning to resign and move abroad.

Last week, Dhiyares newspaper reported that Shameem had purchased a flat in Turkey and was planning to move to the country after resigning from his post. Similar rumours have been doing the rounds on social media.

When asked about it, Shameem told Atoll Times that it was an "blatant lie".

"I have no plans to resign from my post," he said.

There are rumours that soon after his resignation he will be appointed as the chief justice. However, he denied this as well.

"I don't have any intention of becoming the Chief Justice. There are more experienced people," Shameem said.

The rumours about Shameem started doing the rounds after the PG office decided to drop charges against youth minister Ahmed Mahloof in connection with the MMPRC corruption case. The decision of the PG office has led to rifts within the office as well.
