Islamic ministry has declared Friday as Eid al-Fitr in Maldives.
Islamic minister Dr Ahmed Zahir made the announcement after a meeting held Thursday evening to establish the sighting of Shawwal crescent according to the Islamic lunar calendar.
In his statement, the minister said that reliable astronomical data confirm that the moon of Shawwal 1444 would have been above water for all parts of the country and all Islamic countries at sunset on Thursday.
The minister also said that some Islamic countries have received official information about the sighting of the moon.
The Shawwal crescent has been sighted in parts of Saudi Arabia, according to local media reports. However, countries like Indonesia and Malaysia did not observe the sighting of the moon, and have declared Saturday as Eid-al-Fitr.
