The island council in GDh. Hoandehdhoo issued an open invitation for water donation on Thursday as the island had been hit by a month-long drought.

It has been more than a month since Hoandedhoo ran out of drinking water and has been experiencing a prolonged dry spell. According to local residents, the island was facing water shortage even before the start of the fasting month in March.

The island council announced on Thursday that due to drought, the public tanks and most houses in the island have all run out of rain water.

According to the council, the remaining rain water stored in few houses is close to running out as people in houses where they have run out are drawing water from houses where rain water is available now.

The council said:

  • Opportunity is open to those interested in donating drinking water to the people of Hondedhoo

  • Those interested in donating drinking water should contact Secretary General Muaz Mohamed at 9192818 or Council Executive Inayatullah Abdul Sattar at 7915501 to take it forward

Council president Hussain Varish told Atoll Times on Wednesday that though Fenaka was officially informed about the shortage of drinking water from the island on March 29, the state-run utility company has so far not made any progress in supplying water to the island.

"The company had said it would get water last week as well," Varish said, pointing out that Fenaka had earlier given a date to resolve the issue but had not done so.

Fenaka is yet to respond to queries from Atoll Times on the issue.
