Fenaka has supplied 20 tonnes of water to GDh. Hoandehdhoo island, which has faced water shortages for over a month.
It has been more than a month since Hoandehdhoo ran out of drinking water due to a long dry period with no rain.
Hoandehdhoo councillor Ahmed Shiham told Atoll Times on Sunday that Fenaka supplied 20 tonnes of water to the island on Thursday. An additional 30 tonnes of water is required, he said.
"The council has asked for around 50 tonnes of water. We have received 20 tonnes now. Fenaka has said it would provide it as requested. But I can't say it with certainty. Hopefully, it will be provided," Shaheem said.
Fenaka has not commented on the matter yet. The council has made arrangements to distribute the 20 tonnes of water sent from Fenaka to different parts of the island.
Hoandehdhoo usually runs out of drinking water during the north-east monsoon. Last year as well, Fenaka supplied water to the island after it ran out of water.
It is important to note that several islands across the country run out of drinking water around the same time. Hoandehdhoo’s close neighbour Nadella is in a similar state, and they are not able to use the ground water for consumption because the water and sewerage networks have not been completed in most of the islands in the country.
With the highly likely possibility of ground water being contaminated without proper sewerage networking, the ground water is not suitable for consumption.
